Physical Activity

Did you know that walking a mile in 15 to 20 minutes uses the same amount of energy as running that mile in 8 to 10 minutes? To maintain good general health the Chief Medical Officer recommends adults engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity five times a week, and children should aim for one hour at least five times a week. Increase physical activity:

  • Aim to take 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week.
  • Get on your bike! The council has FREE training and bike maintenance sessions for cyclists including young people, school groups and community groups. Find out more.
  • Westminster’s leisure facilities offer sports opportunities for everyone. Five indoor and two outdoor sites provide many services from gyms and swimming pools to basketball and kids activities. Chair-Based Yoga

Following the same structure and model of the one-to-one sessions, Westminster Health Trainers also offer in-home Chair-based Yoga sessions to clients who can’t or won’t leave their home due to enduring mental or physical health issues. Chair-based yoga includes breathing exercises that work to enhance the breath, ultimately improving the management of pain and difficulties with sleeping. This particular form of yoga also provides a physical practice that focuses on extending a client's range of motion. Over six weekly sessions the client is taken through the many benefits of yoga and then offered a final seventh session one month later to review their progress and offer any additional guidance in relation to the client building towards a regular self-practice of yoga at home or in the community.
